Description
“He was a night owl,” Jamie Bernstein says of her famous father. “He could never shut his motor off, and so, so much of his most creative times happened in the middle of the night.” This proclivity lies at the heart of Late Night with Leonard Bernstein, an intimate portrait that aims to recreate the moments of inspiration, humor, beauty, and experimentation that friends and family came to expect from the legendary musician, conductor, and composer during those magical predawn hours. Jamie Bernstein hosts this affectionate and informal cabaret that invites audiences into her father’s famous late-night soirees at the Dakota with film clips and personal memories. Late Night is a glimpse of the maestro at home – silly and gregarious, and both an eternal teacher and student of music. Acclaimed soprano Amy Burton, and pianists John Musto and Michael Boriskin perform Bernstein’s favorite music as well as his own. Bernstein is best known as the longtime conductor of the New York Philharmonic, music director for the New York Symphony Orchestra, and as composer of such popular scores as “West Side Story,” “Candide,” and “On the Town.”
