• Volunteer Manager, Part-Time

    Job Description

    PURPOSE:    The Volunteer Manager has primary responsibility for recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training, and scheduling volunteers and ensuring that the activities of volunteer workers meet the needs of the organization. This person performs a variety of tasks, leads and directs the volunteer base working with shelter, events, and administration personnel to provide volunteer help as necessary and requested.

     
    Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

    • Recruit and Evaluate - Develop application process, maintaining current information. Screen, interview and select individuals to serve as volunteers. Ensure that the work volunteers perform is in compliance with organization standards. 

    • Monitor any certification process volunteers are required to complete; Evaluate volunteers' performance.

    • Develop and maintain current and concise volunteer handbook; Ensure all volunteers receive this in a form that is digestible to them, printed, electronic or digital.

    • Log and maintain service hours timely and accurately in DonorPerfect database.  

      
    Promote & Market  

    • Support Development and Shelter Department needs when volunteer help is required for offsite events; Coordinate and facilitate training of volunteers for these events and organization promotion opportunities.

    • Publicize the need for volunteers to generate the greatest possible response utilizing website, job fairs and other promotion events as mediums to market volunteer opportunities.

    • Communicate regularly with staff informing of the role of volunteers and their contributions to the organization.


    Coordinate

    • Organize, direct and supervise committee meetings as necessary including sitting on and actively engaging the NHHS Volunteer Committee that meets quarterly.

    • Work with Executive Director - Organize special projects, appreciation events etc., working within budgets.  Actively research options for appropriate volunteer program recognition. 

    • Coordinate ongoing training and support of both new and existing volunteers to ensure quality meaningful service of this group.

    • Provide support, advice and guidance to volunteers to guarantee they carry out their responsibilities effectively.

     
     General

    •  Maintain ongoing contact with Executive Director and Operations Director regarding the volunteer program relative to shelter volunteers and those who give service peripherally.

    • Maintain confidential volunteer files.

    • Stay abreast of Best Practices in the field with a view to improving the program within the NHHS.

    • Participates in fundraising events.

     
    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and task satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 

    • Minimum two years of experience in volunteer management or related field.

    • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks/projects in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities mindful of time sensitivities and deadlines.  Must possess superior time management skills.

    • Ability to succeed and thrive in a collaborative team environment.

    • A degree of creativity and assertiveness is expected, while being able to draw out skills and interests in others that might not be readily apparent.

    • Public speaking skills necessary.  

    • Proficiency in computer applications: Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint; COnstant Contact; Social media platforms including Facebook.   

    • Demonstrated ability to work within budgets.

    • Ability to build alliances with community organizations and agencies.

    • Must understand and respect confidentiality, be professional, able to think strategically, and be able to prioritize and focus on details.

    • The employee is expected to comply with all NHHS’s policies and to act as an advocate for the animals in adherence to our mission.


    CONDITIONS

    • Hectic work environment with multiple demands from peers, superiors, animals, and the public.

    • Exposure to animals with varying physical and emotional problems so must be prepared for difficult situations.

    • Some travel using personal vehicle will be necessary in commission of the job but will also be required to drive NHHS transport.


    WORK WEEK

    • Part-time employee with regularly set hours, although some flexibility is required.  Employee will be required to work day,evening, and weekend hours as necessitated by department scheduling needs, and to a lesser degree, in support of Development and Events schedule. Work to be completed in the office with minimum weekly employment of 24 hours per week.  No sensitivities to companion animals.
